People urged to look after finances at Christmas
Consumers should not overstretch themselves financially over Christmas, a leading charity has warned.
The Consumer Credit Counselling Service advised consumers to plan their spending for the Christmas season and to manage a realistic budget.
Frances Walker, spokesperson for the charity, told the Herald: "If you are using credit cards over the festive period, it is essential you make plans to clear your balances in the months after Christmas."
Ms Walker was speaking in response to figures from Deloitte, which predicted that Britons would spend around £17 billion on Christmas presents this year.
The study stated that clothes, jewellery and MP3 players were likely to be among this year's most popular presents.
Recent studies have also predicted record levels of spending over the internet throughout the festive period.
According to the Interactive Media in Retail Group, Britons will spend some £7 billion on the internet in the run-up to Christmas.
