Open plan living ‘proving popular’
Converting the ground floor of a property into a modern open plan living space is among the most popular projects undertaken by home improvers, the results of a new survey suggest.
Phil Spencer, the presenter of Channel 4's Location, Location, Location programme, recently told the Sunday Times that one of the best ways to add value to a home is to create more space downstairs.
Shifting hallways and removing doorways and partition walls are all simple ways to give a Victorian or Edwardian house a contemporary open-plan feel that will eventually be reflected in its selling price, he said.
The findings of a study commissioned by Halifax suggest homeowners, who often opt to take out a loan to finance a home improvement project, have been following Mr Spencer's advice.
It found 2.9 million rooms have disappeared from homes in past five years and that a further 2.2 million are earmarked for conversion in 2008 as people switch to open plan living.
