Most spenders ‘do not consider saving’

A person's attitude towards saving could play a much bigger part when it comes to putting money aside than how much they actually have, according to new research.

The Individual's Saving Decision report from the Building Societies Association (BSA) has found that 30 per cent of Britons who do not hold back funds for a rainy day would not - even if they could.

Savings benefits were highlighted by the company, with peace of mind and long-term assurance highlighted as particularly strong reasons to kick the consumption habit, it added.

And in saying "I can't afford to save", people are distancing themselves from responsibility - a habit they need to break, according to BSA director general Adrian Coles.

"Saving is a very individual decision and whilst some people in one situation view saving as a rewarding priority, others in the same situation see it as little more than a costly sacrifice," he said.

Meanwhile, Unbiased.co.uk has reported that Britons put away £136 billion in 2006 - £25 billion up on the previous year.
