Millions suffering ‘pin code overload’

A large proportion of people in Britain have more pin codes for their cards than they can keep track of, it has been reported.

Some 16 million Britons take to writing down the numbers to ensure they can recall them, according to Abbey.

A further 2.4 million keep their pin stored in close proximity to their card, meaning that fraudsters could gain easy access to their money, it added, which may see people taking out loans in order to get their finances back on track.

This could particularly be a problem for the 5.7 million who use one pin number for multiple accounts.

"We really do urge you to try and commit them to memory rather than write them down. Otherwise it's like signing a blank cheque for fraudsters," said Steve Shore, head of banking at Abbey.

This comes as research from money charity Credit Action has showed that people in the UK have amassed a personal debt mountain of £1.3 trillion.
