Increase in buy-to-let lending recorded

An increase in the number of buy-to-let mortgage deals during the later part of last year has been recorded.

Figures released by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) have shown that house loans agreed - including remortgages - reached 179,100 during the second six months of 2007.

This was up from the 171,800 buy-to-let mortgage deals recorded in the first six months of the year.

It is possible that the credit crunch has not severely affected the buy-to-let market with CML director general Michael Coogan suggesting there is still a "healthy appetite" for investors for the next 12 months.

"Buy-to-let has remained resilient in the face of the funding constraints that have affected the sector and the wider mortgage market," he noted.

More demand for rental property has been created by fewer residential mortgages, personal finance writer Conal Gregory stated recently.

This is "good news" for landlords, he told the Yorkshire Post.
