House prices show ‘massive March increase’

Houses prices in England and Wales grew stronger in March than at any point in the last four years, it has been reported.

In the four weeks before April 7th 2007, the average price of a property rose £8,307 - 3.6 per cent - the highest increase since April 2002, according to Rightmove.

This resulted in a 15 per cent year-on-year increase - the highest in nearly four years - taking the mean asking price to £236,490, it added.

Miles Shipside, Rightmove's commercial director, claimed the traditional Easter bounce, low supply and increase mortgage finance availability were behind the numbers.

"While a boost is expected around Easter, £8,000 in a month is the largest amount we have ever recorded," he said.

In Scotland, Glasgow Solicitors' Property Centre has claimed that house price inflation in the west central area of the country is running at an average of 10.7 per cent - a 7.7 per cent increase on this time last year, according to the Herald.
