Contents insurance ‘can cover baggage loss’

Homeowners with a mortgage and contents cover could save money on their travel insurance.

One expert has advised homeowners to check their contents insurance policies before arranging travel insurance as there could be a way to save money on premiums.

Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, remarked that some contents insurance policies can cover loss of baggage when embarking on a holiday.

"There is therefore no need to include baggage cover if you take out travel insurance, thus reducing the premium, because it is covered by your home policy," he advised.

Homeowners should check that they are covered for personal possessions outside the home as it can cover homeowners' baggage in "most cases", Mr Crowder added.

Such insurance policies cover possessions such as personal effects and technology like digital cameras.

Figures from gapyear.com state that 25 per cent of young people travel uninsured.
