Chancellor announces flood relief for victims

The chancellor of the exchequer has announced the implementation of a series of measures designed to alleviate the suffering of those affected by flooding.

Alistair Darling has revealed that the Finance Bill legislation, which will waive interest and surcharges on late tax, will be brought forward in order to assist the victims.

Similarly, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will not seek to punish people in flooded areas who cannot pay their bills on time - a move that may be helpful to those considering emptying their savings to repair damage.

"I want to ensure that people affected by the flooding do not have to worry about tax or their tax credit award at this difficult time," said Jane Kennedy, financial secretary to the treasury and minister for HMRC.

Mr Darling was appointed chancellor in late June by new prime minister Gordon Brown.
