Bike thefts lead to home insurance warning
Britons looking to help the environment by using a bike instead of a car may be a prime target for thieves, according to a home insurance company.
Research from Halifax Home Insurance has found that a bicycle is stolen in the UK once every 71 seconds, with 439,000 taken annually.
It added that this is a ten per cent increase on 2005 and costs the country £146 million.
"With the majority of thefts coming from bikes that have been placed under lock and key, it may be worth considering spending a little more money for a high security lock," said Vicky Emmott of Halifax Home Insurance.
Once a house becomes compromised by a burglar, a home insurance policy is also at risk.
This may be a debt that some cannot afford to take on, with money charity Credit Action reporting a combined personal debt of over £1.3 trillion in the UK.
