Bailiffs ‘will not be allowed in - yet’
New regulations designed to protect those in debt from having their home entered by bailiffs have been announced by the minister for Constitutional Affairs.
Vera Baird has told householders that their property will not be compromised by people looking to claim possessions to the value of the debt.
But once new licensing laws are in place, official operators so long as they are licensed will legally be allowed to force entry - something Ms Baird has called a "last resort [for] when all other avenues have been exhausted".
The measures have been drafted in order to protect homeowners from having their valuables repossessed due to a high level of debt - something which may be common in the UK as Credit Action revealed the UK reached £1.25 trillion in owed money last year.
"We decided to bring in a range of safeguards to raise the professional standards of bailiffs and protect the public," Ms Baird said.
